Commitment to the Lake

Great Salt Lake Minerals has operated adjacent to a bird sanctuary for 40 years and has hosted the Utah State University seagull census project for many years.

In December 2008, GSL and the Utah Department of Natural Resources agreed to a lease exchange. The company agreed to relinquish 30,000 acres with high ecological value near Promontory Point that it has held, but not developed, for 40 years. In exchange, the state agreed to lease to GSL 37,000 acres on the northwest portion of the lake that have high mineral concentrations and low wildlife value.

Commitment to the Lake 2Great Salt Lake Minerals’ application for additional solar evaporation ponds is focused predominantly in desolate sections of the northwest arm of the lake that are less hospitable for wildlife and are identified as suitable for mineral leasing in the Great Salt Lake Comprehensive Management Plan Resource Document.
